USD to CAD Purchase Cost Calculator 2026

Updated October 2026 · 2026 CRA rules

A US price tag is rarely what you end up paying. Enter the price and shipping in US dollars to see the Canadian cost after the exchange rate, your card's foreign transaction fee, any duty and broker fee, and the sales tax charged at the border.

Use 0 for a US-dollar account or a card with no FX fee.

Many goods made in Canada, the US or Mexico qualify for duty-free CUSMA/USMCA treatment. Goods made elsewhere can have duty even when shipped from the US. Check the Canadian Customs Tariff for your item.

How to record a US purchase

Enter the expense at the Canadian amount that actually posted to your card or bank account. That figure already includes the foreign transaction fee. Keep the US invoice and the statement that shows the Canadian charge. If a courier collected tax, keep that invoice too: it shows the GST/HST you paid on import, which a registrant can claim as an input tax credit.

When you have to convert a number yourself, the usual income-tax standard is the Bank of Canada rate on the day of the transaction. Another reliable source is fine if you use it the same way every time. For GST/HST, the rate you were actually charged and the Bank of Canada rate are both accepted ways to convert.
