Canadian Sales Tax Calculator: GST, HST, PST and QST

This calculator gives an estimate for general information only and is not tax, legal or accounting advice. Rates shown are general rates; some goods and services are zero-rated, exempt, or taxed differently, and rounding can differ by a cent. Confirm with the Canada Revenue Agency, Revenu Québec or your provincial tax authority, or a qualified professional.
How sales tax works in Canada
Canada does not use one national sales-tax rate. A bill can show GST only, GST plus a provincial tax, or a single HST.
Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut charge GST at 5% and no provincial sales tax. British Columbia adds 7% PST. Saskatchewan adds 6% PST. Manitoba’s provincial tax is called RST and is 7%. Quebec charges GST plus QST at 9.975%. In each of those places, every tax is calculated on the price before tax. The provincial tax is not piled on top of the GST.
Five provinces charge one harmonized sales tax instead. Ontario is 13%. Nova Scotia is 14%. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island are 15%. The customer sees a single tax line.
Use Add tax when you have the price before tax. Use Remove tax when a receipt shows only the total and you need the pre-tax amount. The table lists the general rate for every province and territory. Some supplies are taxed differently, so treat the result as a starting estimate.

Questions
What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?
GST is the federal 5% goods and services tax. HST is a single combined tax used in five provinces, so you see one line instead of two. PST, RST and QST are provincial taxes charged on top of GST in the provinces that do not use HST.
How do I calculate sales tax backwards?
Divide the total by 1 plus the combined rate. For 13% HST, divide by 1.13. The result is the price before tax, and the difference is the tax. This calculator does that, and it splits GST and the provincial tax where both apply.
Which provinces charge HST?
Ontario charges 13%. Nova Scotia charges 14%. New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island charge 15%.
Is PST charged on GST?
No. PST, RST and QST are calculated on the price before tax, not on the GST. The taxes sit side by side.
Do small businesses have to charge GST/HST?
Generally, once taxable sales go over $30,000 in four consecutive calendar quarters, you have to register. See the Canada Revenue Agency for the small-supplier rules that apply to your situation. Check with our GST registration checker.
