Sales tax in Alberta
Alberta charges the federal GST at 5% and does not add a provincial sales tax. A typical taxable sale has one tax line.
On a $100 price before tax, the GST is $5 and the total is $105. To remove GST from a total, divide by 1.05. A $105 receipt is $100 before tax and $5 of GST.
There is no PST account to set up with the province for general sales. Businesses that must charge GST register with the Canada Revenue Agency. This page does not decide who must register.
The 5% figure is the general rate. Basic groceries and some other supplies are taxed at 0%, and some supplies are exempt. If a receipt shows no tax, do not assume the calculator’s 5% applies to that purchase.
