Sales tax in British Columbia

British Columbia charges two taxes on many taxable sales: 5% GST and 7% PST. They are calculated separately on the price before tax. PST is not charged on the GST. Together, the general combined rate is 12%.

On $100 before tax, GST is $5, PST is $7, and the total is $112. To go backwards from $112, the price before tax is $100, with the same $5 and $7 split.

GST is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency. PST is administered by the province, separately from GST. A business can be registered for one, both, or neither, depending on what it sells.

PST rules are not the same for every service. From October 1, 2026, PST applies to some services that were not taxed before. Check the province’s PST pages before you assume a service is taxable. Goods such as groceries can also be treated differently from the general rate.
