Sales tax in Manitoba

Manitoba’s provincial sales tax is called RST, the retail sales tax. The general RST rate is 7%. GST is charged as well, at 5%. Each tax is worked out on the price before tax, so RST is not applied to the GST. The general combined rate is 12%.

On $100 before tax, GST is $5 and RST is $7. The customer pays $112. If you only have the $112 total, reverse mode returns $100 before tax, $5 GST and $7 RST.

GST registration is with the Canada Revenue Agency. RST is a provincial tax with its own rules about which goods and services are taxable. A haircut, a grocery item and a piece of equipment may not all be treated the same way.
