Sales tax in Ontario

Ontario charges a single harmonized sales tax of 13%. A typical taxable invoice does not show a separate GST line or a provincial sales tax. The 13% covers both portions, but you record one HST amount.

Choose Add tax when you know the price before tax. On $100, the HST is $13 and the total is $113. Choose Remove tax when the receipt shows only what you paid. Divide by 1.13. A $113 total is $100 before tax and $13 of HST.

Those two numbers, pre-tax and HST, are what most people enter when they log a receipt. If you are registered, the HST on a business purchase may be an input tax credit. This page does not decide if a purchase qualifies.

Thirteen percent is the general rate. Basic groceries, some medical items and a few other supplies are not taxed at 13%. A point-of-sale rebate can also change the tax on items such as books. If the receipt disagrees with 13%, keep the receipt and follow it.
