Sales tax in New Brunswick

New Brunswick charges harmonized sales tax at 15%. There is no separate GST line and no provincial sales tax on a typical invoice. The 15% is the full tax.

Add tax to a $100 price and the HST is $15, for a total of $115. Remove tax by dividing the total by 1.15. A $115 receipt is $100 before tax and $15 of HST.

Businesses that charge HST deal with the Canada Revenue Agency for that tax. There is no second provincial sales-tax registration sitting beside it for general sales.

Fifteen percent is the general rate. Zero-rated and exempt supplies exist, including many basic groceries. Do not add 15% to a price that the receipt already shows as tax-free. If you are comparing a quote from another HST province, check the rate before you copy it. Nova Scotia’s general rate is 14%, not 15%.
