Sales tax in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia’s general HST rate is 14%. The rate dropped from 15% to 14% on April 1, 2025. Older receipts from before that date may still show 15%. Use 14% for taxable supplies on or after the change.

On $100 before tax, HST is $14 and the total is $114. To remove 14% from a total, divide by 1.14. There is no separate PST line. HST is the only sales tax on a typical taxable sale.

A 15% habit is easy to keep by accident. If you are checking a 2026 invoice, 14% is the general rate to test against. If the supplier charged 15% after the change, the bill itself needs a second look. This calculator will not correct someone else’s invoice.

Some supplies remain zero-rated or exempt. The 14% figure is the general rate, not a rule for every good and service.
